Tour description

Join Erna as she explores the unique architectural heritage of Vandans and discover how traditional Montafon houses, modern architecture, and flood protection measures shape the town’s character.

The village of Vandans lies at the foot of the striking Zimba mountain. Here, centuries-old Montafon-style houses blend with contemporary architecture, creating a diverse village landscape. The traditional Montafon-style house combines a whitewashed, masonry section with a dark wooden section. But the town’s architectural culture is evident not only in individual houses but also in many aspects of village life.

On the Gaglaweg, you’ll join Erna on a discovery tour through Vandans. Along the way, you’ll encounter unique buildings, historic shelters, and sites that tell the story of life alongside the surrounding torrents. Playgrounds, forest trails, and the walking path along the Ill River provide a variety of stops along the way.

What is a Muntafuner Gaglaweg?

In the Montafon dialect, “Muntafuner Gaglaweg” means something like “Montafon Children’s Trail.” For your adventure, you’ll need the Gaglaweg backpack. You can rent one for a deposit at one of our tourist information offices or citizen service centers. Inside, you’ll find everything you need for your hike.
A unique puzzle awaits you on every Gaglaweg trail. Once you’ve solved it, you’ll receive a small gift. You can also purchase one of eleven Erna souvenir jars at a special price of €4.00. Each trail is dedicated to a different theme and takes you through the diverse landscape of the Montafon.
So: Grab your backpack, join Erna, and set off on a journey of discovery together.
You can find more information about our Muntafun Gagla Trails HERE.

Vandans Municipal Office

Directions
From the Vandans municipal office, first head to the two churches in the town center, and from there hike out of the valley toward Mustergielbach. After crossing the stream, keep to the left and follow the top of the dam to Valkastielstraße. Turn left there.

After a few meters, you’ll reach the Mustergielbach dam gates. These protective structures were built at the beginning of the 20th century to better protect Vandans from mudslides and flooding. Nearby is the “Gemsle” forest playground, which offers various play options and shaded spots perfect for taking a break.

Follow a narrow footpath downhill for a few meters in elevation toward the town center. At the Vandans kindergarten, the adjacent playground offers another opportunity to rest and play. The trail then leads you slightly uphill again to the “Mangahüsli,” a particularly ornate Montafon-style house.

From there, continue on to the crest of the Rellsbach dam, one of the mountain streams that surround the village. A short path through the meadows leads you to the Innerbach district. The trail takes you past the historic Montafon Krauthobel factory and the Golmerbahn valley station.

Once you reach the Illweg, you’ll hike back out of the valley toward the town center. The bike and walking path along the Ill will accompany you for the final few meters to the starting point at the Vandans municipal office.
